Marshall Goldsmith calls not listening the most passive-aggressive form of disrespect for other people.  Too strong, not really because being so consumed and focused on yourself is never a good thing. I have to work very hard at this but it is so worth it for myself and the other person.  I read this recently in the HBR and thought it would be helpful:
